Lake Placid in the Snow

A few weeks ago we went to Lake Placid for the weekend. This was originally planned as a maple syrup trip - March is when there are a lot of maple festivals around as it is usually when they tap the trees after winter. Unfortunately because of the cold winter and the fact it was still below freezing most of the time they hadn't tapped the trees yet. We did still go to a maple syrup farm and get lots of maple goodies though!

We headed up on Saturday morning and spend most of the day walking around the village of Lake Placid, including all around Mirror lake as it was completely frozen. It was pretty cold and snowing all day but still reasonable to be outside most of the day.

They even had dog sled rides

The afternoon/evening involved trips to get wine, touring a brewery and eating way more cheese than anyone really should in one go. Yum!! Sunday morning we went to the Olympic ski jump center. I had been there in the summer but it seemed so different covered in snow. It was a bit overcast still so the view of the high peaks wasn't the best but it was still worth it.

We then headed out to High Falls Gorge. They pulled some rubbery metal shoe grippers onto our shoes and we walked the path around the gorge. Of course all the waterfalls were frozen, but it made it really unique and beautiful. There was a camp fire at the end with marshmallows to roast which was perfect.

After the gorge we went a little further down the road to Whiteface Mountain. For some reason we didn't even think about skiing before but we decided to go up the gondola anyway. It was such a great view with all the fresh snow from the day before.

The trees were so pretty

Then it was homeward bound by late Sunday ready for a new week!

We will never be ski jumpers!!
